Sam started learning carpentry at secondary school, and with a fantastically well equipped workshop at his disposal he quickly took to woodturning and electronics. This led him to study Mechanical Engineering at university where he discovered green woodworking.

He started carving spoons and cups as a hobby alongside his studies before progressing into other greenwood crafts including pole-lathe turning and splint basketry.

After university, Sam spent a couple of years working for a small UK sportswear company, running logistics and warehouse operations, before following a long held ambition and travelling to train and work as a Scuba instructor in the Philippines. Coming back to the UK, he sought to make woodworking more than a hobby, and an apprenticeship with Lawrence came at just the right time and he started his training in August 2018.

Alongside his chair making, Sam continues to pursue a number of wooden crafts, and is a keen bushcrafter and angler.
