Frequently Asked Questions

  • Absolutely, bring us your old chair and we can weave a new leas of life into it! Get in touch with us here

  • We harvest as much of our raw materials as we can. Every summer we travel to the River Avon in Herefordshire, and the River Wansbeck in Northumberland to cut common club rush (Schoenoplectus Lacustris). Rush is a wonderful renewable material, harvested after it flowers every year enables us to cut the same patch year on year.

We source our Ash and occasionally Oak from the woodland around our Workshop in the Marchmont Estate. The Estate is currently managing all the ash woodland for Ash Dieback, and we use any trees that are too good for firewood/biomass.

  • We make our rush seat chairs in batches, often working on around 15 a month. It takes us around 3 days to turn, steam-bend and assemble the frames, then each chair takes between 4 and 5 hours to weave the seat.

  • If you have an idea you think The Marchmont Workshop can help with, we’d love to hear it. We’re open to bespoke commissions of all kinds, time allowing.

  • Please get in touch regarding our rates for Interior Designers and other trades. Our contact information can be found here

  • Of course! We have two Open Studios a year in conjunction with the Marchmont Makers Foundation, but we are happy to arrange a visit any time. Get in touch with us here to arrange a time and date.

Keep an eye on our Social Media channels for news about Open Studios and other shows we attend.

  • Every Rush Seat Chair that leaves our workshop has a simple wax polish on the wooden frame that will protect it from spills and stains over time but will still allow the wood to age and develop character over time. If anything does get spilled over the chair, just give it a wipe down with a damp cloth.

The rush seat itself needs no regular care, simply take care to keep in a dry environment. As a natural fibre, rush can go mouldy if left in a damp environment.

  • Our tables are finished with a few coats of Osmo TopOil, a durable food-safe finish that is water-repellent and indelible and will not flake, peel or blister over time. Simply wipe down with a cloth and cleaning product of your choice after use.

  • We can! We’ve previously sent abroad in the EU and as far as Australia, though it is expensive. Please get in touch here and we will be able to advise the best course of action
